Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Jack Haflett!

Jack Haflett has been a committed volunteer with Partners in Housing since 2022. He began his journey as a helper in the Childcare Enrichment Center during the annual holiday shopping event. His eagerness to support Partners in Housing programs led him to transition from working with children to assisting with furniture deliveries and pickups which is one of our most important areas of need.

For Jack, self-sufficiency means more than just assistance; it is about providing a well-rounded package of services that truly builds a solid foundation and path to stability for families. Whether he’s picking up donations throughout the community or delivering furniture to families in need, Jack’s impact is palpable. His cheerful disposition and positivity make him a beloved presence for Partners and donors alike.

Jack encourages anyone thinking about volunteering to give it a try.

“It’s more fun than you think! There are so many ways to get involved, and the flexibility makes it easy to fit into your schedule,” Jack said.

When Jack is not volunteering with us, you may find him out ice climbing, skiing, rock climbing, or just enjoying time with his family.

Thank you, Jack, for your willingness to serve your community with such an open heart and great compassion. We’re profoundly grateful and honored to have Jack on our volunteer team!

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)–Saturday, Partners in Housing held an event called “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” Partners in Housing is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides one year of transitional housing and supportive services for families experiencing housing crises or homelessness. The event was aimed at spreading awareness about the organization. One of the organizers said not many people know about one of their resource centers, the Colorado House.

“This used to be an old hotel and a restaurant. So people drive by and often wonder, what is that? What are they doing? So we were just raising awareness. We’ve got so many new neighbors in this community,” said Keri Ellen White, board member for Partners in Housing.

Those 2020 cancellations bumped the Half the Sky Giving Circle 10-year anniversary celebration. Instead, members of the philanthropic group gathered this Aug. 9 for a 10+1 year garden party.

On a sunny late afternoon, party tables filled the tree-lined lawn at First Lutheran Church. Conversations were enthusiastic as members reconnected and welcomed representatives of nonprofits that have received grants over the years.

Kathy Holmes shared the group’s history, dating back to 2009 when she and several other founding members were in Mesa, Ariz., for “good conversation and good wine.” And giving circles.

Partners in Housing is pleased to share that we have added three additional apartments to our transitional housing program. The Family Self-Sufficiency Program, which is our transitional housing program, serves families with children experiencing housing crisis in Colorado Springs.

“People may think it’s only three, one-bedroom apartments being added to what’s become a dearth of transitional and affordable housing in Colorado Springs,” said Mary Stegner, executive director of Partners in Housing. And that’s not much. But the new project’s impact on the community will be exponential, she said.

“It is a big deal to these three families, and the next three and the next three, to have a safe, stable place to live,” Stegner said.

“Moving Families Forward” was the theme of the Partners in Housing July 25 fundraiser at the elegant Club at Flying Horse.

Under clear skies on the patio, 140 guests sampled hors d’oeuvres and beverages as the sunset. This lovely setting with views of Pikes Peak likely contributed to meeting the $100,000 fundraising goal for the evening.

Renowned psychologist Abraham Maslow spent his career studying basic human needs. The need for shelter and food is primary before a person can begin to move on to other levels, including safety, belonging, achievement, and self-fulfillment. The mission of Partners in Housing perfectly illustrates the role this organization takes in not only meeting basic needs, but in addressing all levels with a goal of leading a fulfilling life.

The nonprofit’s mission is to “guides families in housing crisis from insecurity to stability, self-reliance and prosperity.”

Executive Director Mary Stegner has been instrumental in Partners in Housing’s success over the past 30 years. She explained to attendees that the “partners” who receive services are families in crisis with devastating housing issues. All the families served have children, and 90% are headed by single mothers. In 75% of the cases domestic violence is a factor. Confidentiality is key to maintain the safety of those who are highly motivated to change their circumstances.

Per partnersinhousing.org, program applicants must be at least 18, be willing and able to work, legal U.S. residents, and be able to pass a criminal background check. “The household must be homeless, in imminent danger of becoming homeless, or fleeing domestic violence,” states the website.

Once accepted into the program the partners receive a multitude of services along with transitional housing. Partners in Housing maintains 60 transitional housing units in the Colorado Springs area.

“Graduated partner” Keri Ellen White told the audience that she found Partners in Housing while she was going through an “ugly divorce” and had ended up “couch-surfing” with her two children in the homes of generous friends.

Winter 2011

This past holiday season, Partners in Housing was thrilled to be selected as the newest agency in The Gazette’s Empty Stocking Fund!

Perhaps nowhere is the philanthropic spirit of Colorado Springs more evident than in the annual Empty Stocking Fund campaign. Every year, thousands of res[1]idents make donations to this campaign, which supports human service organizations that provide critical safety-net services for our community. Donations are matched by the El Pomar Foundation and the Bruni Foundation, making every gift help even more!

Partners in Housing joins 14 other human service agencies that receive support through the Fund. This year, the Gazette reached its goal of raising $1 million to help local charities. Approximately $20,000 of this amount will assist Partners in Housing in our mission of helping homeless families achieve self-sufficiency.

Partners in Housing Executive Director Frank Stampf summed up the mood of excitement:

“All of us at Partners In Housing are thrilled to be the newest partner agency in the Empty Stocking Fund! What a great way to mark our 20th anniversary year of assisting homeless families with children to achieve self-sufficiency! We are especially grateful for the generous financial support the Fund provides, particularly when the demand for our services is the highest it’s been in our 20-year history. Equally important is the Empty Stocking Fund’s ability to raise our community’s awareness of the issues surrounding family homelessness and how they can help. Once again, the people of the Pikes Peak region have shown their selfless generosity in helping those in need. Congratulations to the Empty Stocking Fund team for making the $1 million goal, and our heartfelt thanks to everyone in the community who donated so willingly to help others in need.”

While 2020 brought many unexpected changes, 2021 brings a wonderful celebration for Partners in Housing as we recognize our 30th anniversary of assisting families in need, in the Pikes Peak Region.

Looking back at Partners in Housing historic organizational documents, we were reminded of the hard work leading up to the formation of Partners in Housing. In the late 1980s, a group of community leaders began researching local needs, and programs in other communities, supporting families who were experiencing homelessness. Among this group were Bishop Richard Hanifen of the Diocese of Colorado Springs and the Executive Director of Catholic Community Services, Sr Lucille Kripple.
Partners in Housing was then started as a program of Catholic Community Services, but quickly was incorporated as a separate, but connected, nonprofit in November 1991. The original mission statement when formed: Partners in Housing is to provide safe transitional housing for families with children who are homeless or soon to be homeless. The Board of Directors and staff of Partners in Housing have made changes to the mission statement a few times over our 30 years, but the core message remains the same. Our current mission statement: Partners in Housing guides families in housing crisis from insecurity to stability, self-reliance and prosperity maintains our ultimate goal of assisting families with children to have stable, safe housing and the knowledge and resources to move forward.
We hope you will join us as we celebrate Partners in Housing milestones and travel through history from November 1991 leading up to November 2021 by signing up for our email distribution list. Signing up for our 30th-anniversary content is as easy as visiting our website, www.partnersinhousing.org, and filling out the newsletter popup window that will appear on your screen.
